Water hardness consists primarily of naturally occurring dissolved Calcium and Magnesium.
It is found in all water supplies and is commonly referred to in units of “Grains per Gallon” (gpg).
Less than 1.0 gpg is soft water, 1.0 to 3.5 gpg is slightly hard water, 3.5 to 7.0 gpg is moderately hard and any value above 7.0 gpg is hard water.

Hard water is not necessarily a health hazard but it can cause many problems in your home. When heated, hard water has limited solubility and as a result it can deposit on the surfaces of water heaters, boilers, coffee makers, pipes as well as some fabrics.
It creates a hard coating commonly called limescale. This scaling reduces heat transfer and causes uneven heating so it effects both system efficiency and appliance longevity. Washing clothing in hard water can reduce fabric life simply because of its abrasive nature. Hard water in the shower can be tough on our skin and hair, causing skin and hair to dry out.
Water softeners are typically used to reduce hardness and an added benefit is that they will also reduce iron levels in the water, if designed properly. Iron reduction will make your white clothing brighter and it will also help reduce staining in bath & toilet fixtures.
