WHAT IS TOTAL COLIFORM

Coliforms include a very large group of bacteria that are present in the soil, in organic material and in surface water.  Many coliform bacteria are not a health threat to humans and pets but certain coliforms (such as E. Coli) are a health concern that can cause us various illnesses.  Town water supplies use disinfectants at the treatment plant to kill coliform bacteria.  Well water is not disinfected unless it is chlorinated at the well itself.
