Cohasset Water Conditions

Town Water Report Overview for Cohasset Massachusetts

Cohasset, what’s in your water?

From April 2019 to March 2021, Cohasset Water Department complied with health-based drinking water standards. All contaminants tested are within legal limits.

It is important to remember that legally does not necessarily mean safe. While a passing grade from the federal government may look good on paper, it doesn’t guarantee that your water meets the latest health guidelines.

Many contaminants are not regulated by the government, yet still pose a risk to your family’s health and well-being.

Cohasset Water Quality Test Results Summary

The latest Cohasset water quality test results showed that 92% of samples collected were below the state Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Action Level for Lead. The reported results were based on tests of 24 residential homes that had the highest potential for lead contamination. Also tested were all of the town’s public schools and licensed daycare facilities with an enrollment of 25 or more.

Although the results are favorable, consider that the testing was limited to certain homes, daycare facilities, and the municipal school buildings out of the more than 2,700 connections throughout the town. What about your home? Lead levels can vary depending on the type and age of the water distribution pipes in, or leading into your home or business.

Lead rarely naturally occurs in water and is usually the result of waste from industry, mining, or smelting. However, lead was used for decades in plumbing and water distribution piping until the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned it in 1986. The majority of homes and businesses built or renovated prior to the ban still have lead-based plumbing systems.

When lead is found in drinking water, it almost always is caused by the corrosion of water piping systems that contained lead and were installed before the lead ban went into effect.

Lead is toxic and a potential carcinogen to all of us, but the risk of lead poisoning is highest in children and pregnant women. It can have term health effects on infants and children.

Pure Water by Design can remove lead from your home’s water by the use of our ion exchange system. This system also treats ph levels, water hardness, and other contaminants.

And speaking of other contaminants, consider this item from the Cohasset water quality report. From April through June 2021, the town failed to test for synthetic organic contaminants. As a result, the report states that it “cannot be sure of the quality of your drinking water during that time.” A test was conducted the following November and results were well below the state’s maximum contaminant level.

As you can see, drinking water testing is limited, and at times, there is even oversight. So, you don’t really know what’s in your home drinking water at any given time. Additionally, the water is treated with chlorine, chloramine, and other chemicals to disinfect the water, and fluoride is added to improve oral health.

Chlorine converts to a water vapor in the shower and can be inhaled. It has been known to cause itchy, dry skin, particularly to those with sensitive skin. It can also prematurely fade hair coloring when washing your hair. Chlorine produces Trihalomethanes, or THMs that are regulated by the EPA. THMs have been associated with cancers and adverse reproductive issues. When water is heated such as when showering, these THMs enter the body through the skin and lungs.

Pure Water by Design can test your home’s water to determine lead and other contaminant levels. We can then design and install a custom filtration system for your home based on your needs to remove fluoride, rust/sediment particles, and other contaminants.
