Hyannis Water Conditions

Town Water Report Overview for Hyannis Massachusetts

Hyannis, what’s in your water?

Annual tests are conducted for various contaminants in the town’s drinking water including lead, iron, and other minerals.

Do You Have Lead in Your Home’s Drinking Water?

The latest report found lead and copper levels below acceptable levels from the 120 test sites. However, lead levels vary and depends on the age and condition of your home’s plumbing system.

Lead was used for decades in plumbing and water distribution piping until the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned it in 1986. The majority of homes and businesses built or renovated prior to the ban still have lead-based plumbing systems.

Every house’s water is different. Schedule A home water test to learn what is in your home’s water.

Hyannis Water Quality Test Results Summary

When lead is found in drinking water, it almost always is caused by the corrosion of water piping systems that contained lead and were installed before the lead ban went into effect.

Lead is toxic and a potential carcinogen to all of us, but the risk of lead poisoning is highest in children and pregnant women. It can have long-term health effects on infants and children.

Pure Water by Design can remove lead from your home’s water by the use of our ion exchange system.

Water Hardness

The water quality report found a range of 12.5 to 53 ppm (parts per million) of hardness. This is caused by a high amount of calcium and magnesium in the drinking water supply. Water hardness is not toxic, but it leaves residue on your skin, washed clothes and dishes. When heated, hard water forms scale and cause damage your water heater and pipes.

Our ion exchange system treats hard water and the removes contaminants that cause it.

Nitrates

A level ranging from non-detected to 4.6 ppm of nitrates was found, below the state maximum level of 10. Nitrates are basically salt that occurs naturally in the drinking water supply and also comes from runoff of fertilizers and septic systems.

Our bodies convert nitrates into nitrites. High levels can cause a serious health issue known as methemoglobinemia, or blue baby syndrome. This condition reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. Prolonged intake of elevated nitrates can cause weakness, excess heart rate, fatigue, and dizziness.
