Iron is necessary for our health. The most well known role that iron plays in human nutrition is in the formation of the protein hemoglobin. Ingesting too much iron through your drinking water supply is not shown to be associated with adverse health effects.

The thing you’ll notice the most from water with high iron is a metallic taste and discoloring of fixtures. Iron will leave red or orange rust stains in the sink, toilet and the bath or shower. It builds up in the appliances and is the common reason for laundry getting discolored.

Manganese is necessary for proper nutrition and is part of a healthy diet. It can have undesirable effects on some of us when it is at elevated concentrations. Lifetime accumulations of manganese are a concern regarding possible neurological effects. Elevated levels of Manganese will cause staining similar to iron stains, but darker.
