Lead is Toxic to us. Especially to children and pregnant women.
The EPA maximum Contaminant level (MCL) goal is 0.015 milligrams per liter (or 15 parts per billion ppb). This is a low level as lead is Toxic. Years ago, Lead was regularly used in many household products and appliances. It was also found in plumbing and water distribution piping until the EPA established a lead ban in 1986.

Lead rarely occurs naturally in water. When it is found, it is usually a result of industrial, smelting or mining wastes. In our area it is almost always caused by the corrosion of water piping systems that contained lead and were installed before the lead ban went into effect.
Lead is toxic to all of us, but the risk of lead poisoning is highest in children and pregnant women. Children absorb 30-75% of the lead that they ingest, adults only about 11%. The EPA lists a variety of adverse health effects when people are exposed to it above the MCL for relatively short time periods. These effects include interference with red blood cell chemistry, delays in normal mental development in babies and young children, the agency also warns that lead is a potential carcinogen and can lead to kidney disease or stroke, with long term exposure.
