Drinking water with high levels of Nitrates can cause numerous health issues. Microorganisms in our digestive system convert Nitrate to Nitrite, Nitrite is poisonous at high levels.
About 5 to 10 % of the Nitrates we consume daily come from drinking water. This can be much higher if the water to your home contains elevated levels of Nitrates.

Nitrates are salts containing Nitrate, a chemical compound that occurs naturally. The improper disposal of waste, agricultural fertilizers, septic systems and industrial waste are other sources of nitrate. High Nitrate levels are often detected in well systems. Drinking water with high levels of Nitrates can cause numerous health issues.
Most Nitrates consumed by us come from raw (or cooked) vegetables, with few known health effects. Water that is high in Nitrates can cause methemoglobinemia, or “blue baby syndrome”, as the ingested nitrates are converted to nitrites in the body. This reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood, a serious condition. Prolonged intake of elevated nitrates can cause gastric distress.
The EPA recommends ion exchange as an effective treatment. The media is selected based on the actual level of Nitrates detected in the water.
