pH of Water
On our list of commonly found contaminants of concern!
pH impacts our Hair, body chemistry, plumbing and appliances.
The pH value of water is a measure of the acid and alkaline level of the water. pH ( Potential of Hydrogen) depends on the presence of free hydrogen and is measured on a pH scale of 1 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral. Below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline. The EPA recommends that water supplies should fall between 6.5 and 8.5.

pH in our water continued …
The main issue in our geographic area is low pH, acidic water, is commonly found in houses with wells, water on the alkaline side is not common and is not a problem at levels less than 8.5. It is actually considered a healthy benefit.
Waters pH can be both a health issue and destructive to plumbing and fixtures. High levels of acidity (low pH) can cause dry, itchy and irritated skin. Other health issues can include premature tooth decay and stomach ailments. The human body needs between 6-8 glasses of water each day to keep proper pH balance in our body. The type of water consumed is critical to proper pH balance. Filtering your home water eliminates; chlorine, heavy metals, ammonia, inorganic chemicals, bacteria, pesticides, remnants of corrosive piping along with prescription medicines and hormones that leach into our drinking supply undetected by Town water tests.
Low pH water readily attacks copper piping. An indication of this can be green staining at sinks and water dispensers and our hair will tint on the green side. This water is destructive to copper piping and valves causing leaks in the water piping system. Since water piping is contained within the walls of our homes, it can be costly to reach these pipes in order to stop the leak and prevent further damage to the home. When water tests below 6.5 it can be an indication of pollutants that present as a result of the corrosive nature of the water. These pollutants can include lead, zinc and copper.
pH can be controlled using a neutralizing agent. The specific agent is selected based on the pH of the water and several other considerations.
