Pharmaceuticals and Hormones in the water supply has caused concern of long term health effects.

Pharmaceuticals are chemical compounds that are used in prescription medicines, veterinary medicines and over-the-counter drugs. Research has been detecting many of these chemicals in water supplies. This began with the detection of human hormones in the late 1960’s when oral contraceptives gained wide use. Since then, new test methods have detected many other chemicals associated with pharmaceutical residues. The list is very long.

Recent research has shown that conventional methods of treating drinking water (at the town treatment plant) such as coagulation and chlorination are ineffective in removing pharmaceuticals. So, these chemicals are present in the water distribution system. They are also present in many well systems as a result of chemicals from septic systems.

Several new methods have been shown to effectively remove between 90% and 98% of the targeted chemicals. Specific media is selected to meet these objectives and systems require several design considerations to achieve and maintain effectiveness.
