Plymouth Water Conditions

Town Water Report Overview for Plymouth Massachusetts

Plymouth, what’s in your water?

While the latest water quality report for Plymouth showed high-quality drinking water, there were detections of a few contaminants near or above acceptable levels.

Above Average Manganese Detected

Notably, an average of 170 ppb (parts per billion) of manganese was detected with a range of 12 to 170 from various test sites, above the state maximum level of 50 ppb. This mineral is found in rocks, soil, groundwater, and surface water. While it is necessary for proper nutrition and is part of a healthy diet, manganese can have undesirable effects on certain sensitive populations at elevated concentrations. Both the federal and state Environmental Protection Agencies have established public health advisory levels for manganese to protect against concerns of potential neurological disorders.

Plymouth Water Quality Test Results Summary

High Iron Level

he average iron level detected was 520 ppb, above the state maximum level of 300. The range was 100 to 520. High levels of iron can cause discoloration of water, stain clothes when laundered, and give water a metallic taste.

Lead Detected

A small amount of lead was detected, well under the state acceptable level. However, lead amounts vary, depending on the type and age of the water distribution pipes inside, or leading into your home or business.

Lead was used for decades in plumbing and water distribution piping until the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned it in 1986. The majority of homes and businesses built or renovated prior to the ban still have lead-based plumbing systems.

When lead is found in drinking water, it almost always is caused by the corrosion of water piping systems that contained lead and were installed before the lead ban went into effect. Lead is toxic and a potential carcinogen to all of us, but the risk of lead poisoning is highest in children and pregnant women. It can have long-term health effects on infants and children.

Pure Water by Design can remove lead from your home’s water using our ion exchange system. This system also treats pH levels, water hardness, and other contaminants.

Chlorine and Your Water

Plymouth, as most all municipalities, use chlorine to disinfect the water at the treatment plant before it is distributed. Chlorine stays in the water and converts to a water vapor in the shower and can be inhaled. It has been known to cause itchy, dry skin, particularly to those with sensitive skin. It can also prematurely fade hair coloring when washing your hair.

Chlorine produces Trihalomethanes, or THMs that are regulated by the EPA. THMs have been associated with cancers and adverse reproductive issues. When water is heated such as when showering, these THMs enter the body through the skin and lungs.
