STEEP report regarding PFAS and other contaminants in our well water

STEEP is an acronym for Sources, Transport, Exposure and Effects of PFAS’s (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances).  This report was completed in 2023 by the University of Rhode Island Superfund Research Program.  The study presents the results of a program that tested well water on Cape Cod.  The study tested for 34 PFAS chemicals, 2 chemicals related to septic system influence, 2 metals related to plumbing systems and 12 other metals commonly found in drinking water supplies.

Detectable levels of PFAS were found in 94% of the wells which were tested.  The percentage of wells with detectable levels of PFAS ranged from 91% on the outer Cape and 100% on the upper Cape.  While the report concludes that the Massachusetts state standard for the sum of 6 PFAS chemicals was not exceeded, high levels of PFAS were detected.

This is a comprehensive report and is a great source of information regarding contaminants of concern that are found in our drinking water supplies.  It is certainly worth a read.  You can click HERE to access the complete report.
